Melasma Treatment in Minneapolis, MN Area

Melasma is a common skin problem that causes brown to gray-brown patches on the face. Most people get it on their cheeks, the bridge of their nose, forehead, chin and above their upper lip. It also can appear on other parts of the body that get lots of sun, such as the forearms and neck.

What triggers melasma?

Melasma is often caused by sun exposure and hormonal fluctuations such as menopause, the use of birth control pills and pregnancy. It is often called the “mask of pregnancy.” Some cosmetic procedures such as photo facials can sometimes trigger melasma, especially when melasma is mistaken for sun damage.

What are the signs and symptoms?

Melasma Treatment Before and After in the Minneapolis, MN AreaCommon signs of melasma are brown or gray-brown patches on the face. These patches most commonly appear on the cheeks, forehead, bridge of the nose, above the upper lip and chin. Some people get patches on their forearms or neck, but this is less common.

Melasma does not cause any symptoms that people feel, but many people dislike the way melasma makes their skin look. Blotchy patches of darker color often appear on the cheeks. The woman on the right developed the brown patches while pregnant.

How is melasma diagnosed?

A doctor can diagnose most patients by looking at their skin. To see how deeply the melasma penetrates the skin, they may look at your skin under a device called a Wood’s light or polarized light.

How is melasma treated?

Melasma can fade on its own. This often happens when a trigger is causing the melasma, such as a pregnancy or birth control pills. When the woman delivers the baby or stops taking birth control pills, melasma can fade. Some people, however, have melasma for years or even a lifetime, and treatments are available.

Topical products to treat melasma include skin lighteners such as hydroquinone, azelaic acid, arbutin, kojic acid and retinol.

If a topical medicine does not get rid of your melasma, a procedure may succeed. Procedures for melasma include a series of chemical peels, microdermabrasion and Pixel.

Melasma Treatment Before and After in the Minneapolis, MN Area

How does it work?

Treatment consists of two phases.

During phase one, a professional masque is applied in the office and left on the skin for a period of time determined by the specialist, according to skin color and type.

Phase two involves at-home maintenance. The mask is removed, followed by an application of Hydravital Factor K Cream. A maintenance cream is applied at home according to the recommended protocol of Dr. Sharif. The objective of this highly-effective maintenance cream is to ensure the continued brightening of the complexion and fading of skin discolorations while restoring luminosity. It is to be used for a minimum of six months to one year.

The full treatment may be repeated every four to six months.
